'Bank Bag Bandit' agrees to plea agreement | Crime

Palm Harbor, Florida -- A Palm Harbor man pleaded guilty Thursday for his role in five bank robberies spanning three counties.

According to the plea agreement, David Dwinell admitted to committing five armed bank robberies in Pasco, Hillsborough and Hernando counties. 

While committing the crimes, Dwinell would go into the banks wearing a dark-colored hat, sunglasses, a mask over his face and a dark-colored jacket while armed with a silver revolver and carrying a blue zippered bank bag. His technique even earned him the nickname "Bank Bag Bandit" by law enforcement.

When agents searched his home, they found a loaded silver .28 revolver, along with all of the other items he would wear during the crimes, and money wrapped in bank bands. An additional $6,762 was found in Dwinell's home office. Other evidence was also recovered from his pickup truck, which doubled as a getaway vehicle, according to the U.S. State Attorney's Office.

Dwinell told authorities he robbed the banks because his house was in foreclosure and he owed money to the IRS.

Dwinell faces a maximum life sentence in federal prison.
