Cruisin' Cafe provides free meals for kids this summer

Hernando County, FL -- Hernando County School Food and Nutrition Services will be providing free meals for kids throughout the summer, thanks to their new "Cruisin' Cafe."

The Cruisin' Cafe is an old school bus that has been converted into a diner on wheels. Beginning on June 11 and lasting through August 10, children ages 8 - 12 can stop by for free well balanced and nutritious meal.

Locations for the bus are as follows:

Hernando County, Florida-- Hernando County Utilities staff has received word from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection that the well sample from the Brookridge #2 well has tested negative for the Escherichia Coli  bacteria. 

The Boil Water Notice issued yesterday for Brookridge residents is now rescinded.

Hernando County, Florida-- Hernando County Utilities received notification that Escherichia Coli bacteria was found in one well sample collected on May 8, 2012.

The County was notified today, May 14, and the well was immediately removed from service.

The utilities services reports that these bacteria can cause sickness and are a particular concern for people with weakened immune systems.

Spring Hill, Florida -- The Hernando County Health Department has issued a swimming advisory for Pine Island Beach effective immediately. 

The health department says bacteriological test results received Monday, March 19 indicate the current water quality is in the poor range and may pose an increased risk of disease exposure, especially to very young children, older adults and those who have weakened immune systems.

County Health Department closing temporarily

Brooksville, Florida -- The Hernando County Health Department/Nature Coast Community Health Center in Brooksville will be closed on Thursday, March 15 for staff training.

The health center will be closed from noon - 6 p.m. However, the Spring Hill location at 7551 Forest Oaks Blvd. will remain open, but services will be limited.

Chicken tests positive for West Nile Virus

Chicken tests positive for West Nile Virus

Hernando County, FL -- Hernando County Mosquito Control Director, Dr. Guangye Hu, announced Wednesday that a sentinel chicken has tested positive for West Nile Virus.  The chicken was located at the Hernando County sewer plant located at US 19/Osowaw Blvd. 

The positive test indicates that mosquitoes carrying the virus are present in the area, however, it's important for residents to know that no human cases have been reported.

Still time to join the Hernando Health Experience

Hernando County, FL -- You still have time to register for the county-wide effort to get fit, shed pounds and do good for the community.

The Hernando Health Experience (HHE) , organized by the Hernando County Parks and Recreation Department, has already helped participants shed thousands of pounds, at about 11 pounds per person!

Two HHE programs were held in 2011, each lasting 12 weeks. Participants have a chance to win up to $1,000 for losing the most weight and shedding the most inches.
