Man flees, runs over deputy's foot | News
Spring Hill, FL-- "Suspects who think about fleeing from us should remember that we likely have much more experience catching suspects, than they do at getting away."
That's what Sheriff Al Nienhuis had to say after one man's attempt to flee resulted in him running over a deputy's foot, being chased by other deputies, and getting bitten by a K-9 on the case.
According to officials, Deputies Dane Jenkins and Joseph Schneider pulled over 23-year-old John Rispoli last night around 7:30 after he ran a stop sign.
When the deputies approached Rispoli, reports say he abruptly turned the car and accelerated toward Deputy Jenkins, putting him in fear of losing his life.
Though Deputy Jenkins stepped backward to avoid being struck, the rear wheel of the Chevy Impala ran over his right foot.
Reports say that's when both deputies got back into the patrol vehicle to chase Rispoli, as they also alerted other officials of the situation.
They were unsuccessful in catching up to him, but reports say it was just a short time later that a detective in an unmarked vehicle spotted Rispoli's vehicle.
The car, at the intersection of Running Oak Ct. and Overview Ln., was found crashed into a fire hydrant and Rispoli was nowhere in sight.
Deputies had a hunch that Rispoli ran into a nearby, heavily wooded area, and a K-9 team began a search.
Deputy Brandon Cox and K-9 Ike were successful in tracking him north, all the way to the Explorer K-8 School, where K-9 Ike bit him after he failed to cooperate with deputies.
"This case is yet another example of how fleeing from law enforcement is both dangerous and unintelligent," said Sheriff Al Nienhuis. "Mr. Rispoli has additional charges and a dog bite because of a very bad choice made when stopped by one of my deputies for a relatively minor traffic violation."
Both Deputy Jenkins and Rispoli were treated and released at a local hospital.
Rispoli was charged with Aggravated Battery on a Law Enforcement Officer, Fleeing to Elude, Leaving the Scene of an Accident with Property Damage and Driving While License Suspended or Revoked. His bond is set at $11,000.
