Outdoor travel writers to explore Nature Coast

The Citrus, Hernando and Pasco County Offices of Tourism Development are promoting the Nature Coast the old fashioned way, by word-of-mouth.

A week-long trip from May 19-26, called the “Nature Coast” FAM Tour, is designed for outdoor/travel writers to experience some of Florida’s best attractions.

The six journalists, who have been published in many notable publications including Alaska Airlines, Southern Living, and Gonomad.com among others, will travel from as far away as California, Oregon and Massachusetts.

Lights out to protect sea turtles

Lights out to protect sea turtles

Clearwater, Florida -- Sea turtle nesting season begins May 1 and ends Oct. 31.

Because newly-hatched turtles find their way to the sea by following the natural light reflected by the water, city ordinances determine specific lighting requirements for beach parking lots, streets, and promenades.

If you live near the beach, make sure you shut off or dim your lights at night.

This precaution can reduce the amount of artificial light that reaches turtle nests and will help hatchlings reach the water safely.

Hernando woman invited to Orangutan Health Project in Indonesia

Brooksville, Florida -- Linda Christian of 100 Acre Wood Wildlife Rehabilitation, Inc. has been accepted as part of a 6-person volunteer team to attend a health project excursion to Sumatra, Indonesia on October 3, 2011.

The expedition involves field research data in a remote area with the goal of bringing knowledge of basic science, public health and wildlife conservation to areas dense with Orangutan populations.

Orangutans (translated into English as "Man of the Forest" from Malay and Bahasa Indonesian), which carry 97% same DNA as Humans, are susceptible to microbes and parasites, as are humans.
